Wearing a seatbelt is one of easiest ways to protect drivers and passengers in a vehicle.
You are 10 times more likely to be killed in a road crash if you are not wearing a seatbelt in a car.

Safety tips

  • Always ensure your seatbelt is properly adjusted and securely fastened.
  • The sash should be placed over the middle of the shoulder and diagonally across the chest.
  • The lap belt should sit snugly over the hips.
  • Never share a seatbelt with a child on your lap.

Drivers must ensure that passengers travelling in their vehicle are appropriately restrained.

Child car restraints

The age and height of a child should be taken into consideration when choosing the appropriate car restraint for your child.

Avoid old or worn restraints, that are more than 10 years old or have previously been in a crash and ensure your child car restraint has been correctly installed in your vehicle. Children aged up to at least 7 years but be restrained in an appropriate child car restraint.

The minimum age requirements for child car restraints are:

Birth - 6 months
  • Rearward facing restraint capsule, or;
  • Rearward facing convertible restraint.
6 months - 4 years
  • Rearward facing restraint, or:
  • Forward facing restraint with a five-point internal harness
  • Forward facing convertible restraint with a five point internal harness, or;
  • a combination restraint used with a five point internal harness.

 4 - 7 years

  • Forward facing restraint with a five-point internal harness, or;
  • Booster seat with a lap and sash seat belt or h-harness, or;
  • Combination restraint used in a booster seat mode.

Children in taxis and rideshare

  • Drivers of taxis and rideshare services must ensure that children aged between 1 and 7 years are restrained in standard seatbelts that are properly adjusted and securely fastened to the best extent possible given the height and weight of the passenger.
  • There is no requirement for children aged between 1 and 7 years to be secured in a child car restraint while travelling in taxis or rideshare vehicles, however the appropriate restraint for the child’s height and weight is the safest option.
  • A child aged less than 1 year can be held on the lap of a parent or caregiver aged 16 years or over while travelling in a taxi or rideshare vehicle, but cannot share the seatbelt.
